Lesson 5: Aurors
Now that the break is over we will start learning about some more serious topics when is comes to DADA. First on the list is Aurors. This special unit of witches and wizards are part of the Department of Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become an Auror, in fact the training is so intense little is known about it. The Auror department does not take on new Aurors very often so it is considered a great honor to become one. Like the other departments there is a Head of the Auror Office and he is the one and only Harry Potter.
Like I noted above the entrance into the program and training are extremely difficult to endure. If you decided you want to attempt the application process you must first excel in your academics. N.E.W.T.s in Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Herbology, Potions, and Transfiguration are mandatory with a grade of E (Exceeds Expectations) or better. Once this is accomplished the applicant will undergo strenuous aptitude and character tests. These tests are designed to see how the applicant reacts under pressure.
If you were to pass all of that, you would be accepted into the actual Auror training program. Once there you would be taught and expected to train in advanced magical combat and other practical defense tactics. Another area they will study is methods of criminal investigation. This type of training lasts for at least three years.
Don’t be deceived, the job as an Auror may seem exciting and glorious, but these are considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the magical world. On the positive side enduring all the training and studies can mean becoming a very well respected wizard in the magical world; and it’s typical that those who work their way up in the Auror Office can become potential candidates for the position of Minister of Magic.
Aurors were a very powerful force against Voldemort and the Death Eaters in the First and Second Wizarding Wars. During this dark time the Aurors were authorized to use whatever force necessary towards the Death Eaters. This includes the Unforgivable Curses (we will go over what these are in a future lesson). Some criminals would rather fight to the death than be caught and sent to Azkaban. Aurors were also used to guard and project high profile people, this is why the Minister usually has Aurors surrounding him at all times in public. Some may recall that Aurors even guarded the halls of Hogwarts when Death Eaters escaped Azkaban. Many felt they were after Harry Potter. During the Second Wizarding War many Aurors were killed when Voldemort attacked the Ministry of Magic and in the Battle at Hogwarts. This is a career that shouldn’t be taken lightly.
