Lesson 2: ROWDY OR FUN
Our second lesson concerns all the crazy potions that can cause trouble, to say the least. The Weasley Twins were surprisingly excellent at making up all kinds of potions and products that were sold in their shop, The Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.
They had perfected their Fever Fudge, made up their own Ageing Potion to defeat the invisible line around the Goblet of Fire. They, to Hermione Granger's admiration, made up a special line of Love Potions that really worked. Now this does not mention a shop full of jokes, creatures and heaven knows what else.
Belch Powder was very popular with the students, if they could get it from Zonko's and sneak it into the castle. Of course, Mr. Argus Filch was always on the prowl trying to catch students using illegal products or artifacts. A good loud belch by a student coming right up behind him, might very well frighten the daylights out of him.
I have compiled a list of ingredients which is made up of different kinds of magical animal parts, herbs and plants that may very well have been used in the potions we will be working on.
Once again we will be guessing at these ingredients, the amounts used in the potions and the type of preparation we will use to concoct each one. I hope you will have fun helping me to create them, even if you might not agree with my plan of action to make up the Ageing Potion, Belch Powder and Fever Fudge!
One thing to remember, all the potions we will be creating will be made in a SINGLE PORTION. We will not be making up a vat of everything.
AGEING POTION
Now the Weasley Twins, Fred and George, tried to trick the age line which circled the Goblet Of Fire. They were sure their potion would make them a touch older.
APM Potion Ingredients for the AGEING POTION -
Alder Buckthorn: The bark is used in ageing potions and skele-gro. (since this plant is used for the Ageing Potion, it most likely was used by Fred and George)
Pennyroyal: This herb is used for protection, as It causes a shield and repels negativity. It can also calm the mind and nerves. Pennyroyal should NOT be consumed by woman who are pregnant. (this herb would protect the drinker, keep him/her calm while the potion took effect and not immediately reverse them back to their true age)
Psyllium: This plant can help to thicken potions.
Vitex: This plant can be used in aging potions. It is responsible for beard growth and also turning hair white. (this surely was used by Fred and George and they probably didn't realize what its effect would be)
Yucca: The stalk and roots are useful in potions to help stop growth. (of course they would not want to keep growing older, so using this plant to stop ageing was a must)
MAKING THE AGEING POTION -
- We gathered the 5 ingredients.
- The Alder Buckthorn bark needs to be crushed into a powder.
- Continuing, the Pennyroyal must be sliced into tiny pieces.
- The Yucca has to be chopped up and diced into very small squares.
- Now the Vitex plant must be crushed into a powder.
- A measured teaspoon of each ingredient needs to be stirred into a preheated cauldron. One cup of water had been brought to a boil just before the herbs and plants were added. The fire under the cauldron must be lowered so the potion can stew for an hour. When the hour is up the final ingredient, Psyllium (the leaves are crushed into a powder) has to be added to thicken the Ageing Potion. Remove the fire from under the cauldron and allow the potion to cool at room temperature.
- Finally the mixture must be poured through a strainer and then poured into a non-breakable flask.
- A proper size cork needs to be placed in the opening.
- It should be kept at room temperature and used within one months time.
BELCH POWDER
Just what Filch would want students taking as they walk around the castle.
APM Potion Ingredients for the BELCH POWDER -
Belch Producing Food:
(not necessarily dangerous, but they can give embarrassing and obnoxious bodily responses)
Vegetables: Peas, Cabbage, Onions, Broccoli, Radishes, Cauliflower and Brussel Sprouts.
Fruits: Apples, Prunes, Bananas and Dried Dates
Fiber: Oat and rye grains
MAKING THE BELCH POWDER -
This potion will take some time, as the ingredients require special drying times. No cooking is required.
All of the following are to be used - broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprout, the skin of the prune and date and finally the juice from a squeezed apple.
- Crush flat one crown of the broccoli and cauliflower.
- Now, crush flat the small brussel sprout.
- All three ingredients are dried in the sun over a 3 day period.
- The skin of both the prune and date needs to be removed and chopped up finely. They are dried in the sun over a two-day period.
- After all, ingredients are thoroughly dried; they must be ground together into a fine powder.
- One apple has been squeezed to give us a half cup of juice.
- Finally mix one teaspoon of powdered ingredients with the apple juice, in a small glass.
Caution should be taken to use as little as necessary to bring about your desired effect.
FEVER FUDGE
Fred and George found their Fever Fudge gave them more then a fever. Boils on their bottom was something they didn't expect.
APM Potion Ingredients for making FEVER FUDGE -
Carduus Benedictus: It can promote sweating to fight off a fever. It is grounded into a powder.
Chocolate: How can you make fudge without chocolate!!! It comes from the cocoa bean, which is dried, cleaned and then roasted. The shell is removed and the beans are crushed into a raw chocolate powder. A half a cup must be used.
Psyllium: This plant can help to thicken potions (made into a powder).
Porcupine Quills: A half a dozen quills (offering sharp and pain) must be ground up into tiny fragments.
Puffer-Fish Eyes: Even though these fish eyes are used in the Swelling Solution, 3 of them are used in our Fever Fudge (help expand the size of the boils).
MAKING THE FEVER FUDGE -
- All ingredients have been collected.
- The fire under our cauldron must be set to offer a medium heat.
- Two cups of warm water had been added to the cauldron.
- The Porcupine Quill fragments are added first and simmered for an hour.
- Next the 3 Puffer-Fish Eyes are dropped into the hot mixture. Expect the eyes to explode, so stand back a foot or so from the cauldron.
- What remains of the eyes must be stirred into the hot mixture.
- Quickly add the Carduus Benedictus powder, stirring rapidly.
- One tablespoon of Psyllium needs to be carefully folded into the almost finished fudge.
- A 1/2 cup of the Chocolate Powder must be added slowly, making sure the mixture has been completely covered.
- Remove the cauldron from the fire.
- Finally, the Fever Fudge mixture must to be poured into a small flat glass dish. Let it cool and then slice into small pieces.
