Lesson 1: POTION SECRETS
Everyone loves to learn secrets about everything and anything. How the magician made the elephant appear out of nothing. How the best tasting blueberry pie is made? What is the secret to making Fever Fudge or Burn-Healing Paste?
In this first lesson we will be looking for the names of some of the less famous and a few famous potions or products listed in the Harry Potter Books. Once we have some of them, we will continue in future lessons to discover what their secret ingredients might be. The ingredients will come from both magical, as well as ancient and modern Muggle herbs, plants, fruits and flowers found in books from the Hogwarts and Muggle Libraries. We will be choosing each ingredient based on their special magical/non-magical healing properties.
Some of the potions will need to be cooked, either by boiling, simmering or brewing, while others may just need a combination of herbs mixed together to create our potion or product.
One thing to remember, all the potions we will be creating will be made in a SINGLE PORTION. We will not be making up a vat of everything.
A list of a few of these Potions are the following -
- Ageing Potion - Now the Weasley Twins, Fred and George, tried to trick the age line which circled the Goblet Of Fire. They were sure their potion would make them a touch older.
- Amortentia - AHHHH The most powerful LOVE Potion in the wizarding world. We know it has a mother-of-pearl sheen to it. We also know the stream rises from the cauldron in characteristic spirals.
- Belch Powder - Just what Filch would want students taking as they walk around the castle.
- Blood-Replenishing Potion - We have read where Mr. Weasley was required to use this potion to recover from Nagini's attack.
- Burn-Healing Paste - Madam Pomfrey used something like this to try to heal Cedric Diggory's face, from the dragons fire.
- Felix Felicis - Liquid Luck for up to 12 hours !!! We learned the color is molten gold. To much can give one over confidence, giddiness and recklessness.
- Fever Fudge - Fred and George found their Fever Fudge gave them more then a fever. Boils on their bottom was something they didn't expect.
- Pepperup Potion - Though out the cold and flu season Madam Pomfrey was constantly using this.
- Veritaserum - The fantastic colorless, odorless truth serum and only 3 drops does the trick.
So, here are some of the potions we will be working on. We hope to discover their secret and not so secret ingredients. I hope you will join me now as we move forward toward our work tables already set up for our lesson #2.
